Royal Park Golf Course – Way More than just Convenient!

Royal Park Golf Course is just north of the city and opposite the Melbourne Zoo. I’m sure I’ve heard more than once the monkey’s laugh at my tee shot!

It is also located conveniently between where my mate lives and where I do!

The course is located on the side of a hill. The number of times I have played there I don’t recall many soft areas so the side slope must be good for drainage.

Royal Park Golf Course – Nine Hole Course Review

One of two public golf courses I have played lately where the opening hole is a par 3 (the other being Yarra Bend).

In the image below you can see the 167 metre, downhill opening par 3 in the foreground. In the background is the closing 268 metre par 4 ninth hole.

167 metres is a long par 3 for me so a 4 iron or hybrid is my choice of club.

After the first hole you take a walk down the shared path, across the railway line to the 2nd tee.

Sometimes you see new (young) groups on hole 2 that didn’t tee off at the 1st… i think it’s the close proximity to the train station!

The second hole par 4 is a straight shot 296 metre uphill hole.

It’s one of those ‘non-intimidating’ holes due to it’s feeling of width and no impending dangers (bunkers or water).

Slightly elevated tee will greet you at hole 3.

A 226 metre dogleg left that will have long hitters driving for the green.

I’m usually in the trees with a hook off the tee or if i’m Lucky in the dip before the green.

A mid length par 3 followed by a a shortish par 5 (still long for me and the longest hole on the course) are the next couple of enjoyable holes.

Another par 3 greets golfers at the sixth hole before crossing the light rail again for a straight 290 metre par 4 seventh and the 375 metre par 5 eighth.

After a walk back along the bike path you tee off next to the first green, uphill to finish at the par 4 ninth.

Overall I found all greens and fairways in good condition. And for a short hitter like me the course is manageable and fun.
