Surprising! Burnley Golf Course, Will it Survive Redevelopment?

Burnley Golf Course, a public nine hole golf course right next to the Monash Freeway.

Burnley golf course is currently closed as i write this (July 2023) and it is it’s proximity to the Monash Freeway that is the reason.

Despite barrier fencing it has been said that too many golf balls have been going outside the course boundary creating a potential risk/hazard to motorists.

While i’m not that knowledgable of all the issues and leagalities, from the aerial shot of Burnely Golf Course above you can see Madden Grove at the top of the image and the Monash Freeway at the bottom.

I first played a round at Burnley Golf Course in May and June of this year (2023) and from the temporary changes to the course i can assume the problems.

At the first hole, there was a temporary tee to the left of the fairway directing you more to the right of the hole away from Madden Grove. Bottom left of the image below.

And hole 3 has been shortened from a par 4 to a par 3 to angle the tee box away from the freeway. The tee box is located short and left of the bunkers in the image below:

Burnley Golf Course – Nine Hole Course Review

As I mentioned above, my first experiences of Burnley Golf Course were in the wet.

The fairways of Hole 1 and 2 were very spongey!

But to their credit, the greens were firm and well maintained.

It was about a 200 metre walk from the second green to the temporay third hole tee location. But as you got closer to the freeway side of the course it handled and drained the water much better.

Hole 4, a 313 metre Par 4 was a nice hole to play. Mid way between the wetter upper holes and the drying out freeway side holes.

Hole 5 at Burnley Golf Course looks like a good hole, but still wet under foot when I played.

Once again the the credit of the greenskeepers, the tee box and greens were firm and well maintained.

From hole 6 on the the closing hole 9 below, the fairways feel firm and somewhat dry. You the get a more enjoyable round of golf with more roll and bounce.

Now i obviously didn’t get to play Burnley Golf Course at it’s best. Here’s hoping that after proposals and redevelopment it becomes something enjoyable for all!
