A public golf course with ‘private club’ appeal, Freeway Golf course is well worth a round of golf!
Being another ‘golf course near me’, Freeway Golf has been a great escape when i needed a pressure release from work.
Hence my review will only be for nine holes. I have only played, and thoroughly enjoyed, the front nine so far.

The new redeveloped course makes course carts more usable and bunker shots… ‘interesting’ for one thing.
Freeway Golf – Front Nine Course Review
The elevated tee behind the clubhouse for the first hole gives a great view of what’s to come. The first four holes on the east before crossing the carpark to continue your round.
Playing my rounds in winter showed my how well the course would hold up to the wet season.
All greens were firm and well maintained and with the exception of midway along the fifth fairway, all fairways were reasonably firm.
The par 3 fourth leading back towards the clubhousewas slightly elevated compared to the tee with timber retaining walls on both sides.
The par 4 fifth hole was my nemesis. A creek that should have been any easy clear intimidated the heck out of me! Two balls lost off the drive and re-drive damnit!
Look how nice the hole looks below:
I like the topography of the course with many level changes and varying tee and green heights.
The proximity to the Yarra River and more specifically Koonung Koonung Creek means the course gets well drained. Although this may be a detriment when Yarra River Levels are high.
I played mid-week each time which also meant that Freeway Golf gave me a sense of exclusivity. Thus adding to the private club feel.
